Distant Voices, Still Lives

The second movie in Terence Davies’s autobiographical sequence (together with “Trilogy” and “The Lengthy Day Closes”) is an impressionistic view of a working-class household in 1940s and 1950s Liverpool, primarily based on Davies’s family. Via a sequence of beautiful tableaux Davies creates a deeply affecting photograph album of a troubled household wrestling with the complexity of affection.
